A classic martini calls for Gin. While some of them enjoy the botanical flavors adding to the herbal qualities of Vermouth, others prefer the other version with Vodka - Vodka-tini.
Stirred or Shaken?
Theoretically, a cocktail made with only booze, only requires stirring. Mr. Bond would disagree, usually we wouldn't fight them but for this, we stand our stance. Shaking a martini would bruise the gin and its botanical flavors.
Having said that, it always best to enjoy something the way you love it!

Chilling the glass: Before you start building your Martini, put your Martini glass in the freezer to chill.
Place the gin or vodka and dry vermouth in a mixing glass.
Add cubed ice and stir for 30 seconds until the Martini is chilled. Strain the drink into your chilled Martini glass.
Garnishing : Pare a lemon peel, and pinch the back of the lemon peel over the martini. Rub the lemon peel around the rim of the glass and drop it into the glass. Alternatively, garnish with speared olives.
Shaken
Chilling the glass: Before you start building your Martini, put your Martini glass in the freezer to chill.
Place the gin or vodka and dry vermouth in a cocktail shaker.
Add cubed ice and shake vigorously for 10 seconds.
If you prefer ice shards floating at the top of your Martini, then simply strain the drink into your chilled Martini glass. If you don't want the ice shards, then strain the drink through a fine-mesh strainer to catch the ice shards.
Garnishing : Pare a lemon peel, and pinch the back of the lemon peel over the martini. Rub the lemon peel around the rim of the glass and drop it into the glass. Alternatively, garnish with speared olives.
